The term

What does Spa mean?

A spa is a facility dedicated to relaxation, wellness, and regeneration. The term "Spa" likely originates from the Latin phrase "Sanus per Aquam," meaning "health through water," referring to traditional healing baths that used water treatments to promote well-being.

Modern spas offer a wide range of treatments, including massages, thermal baths, saunas, steam rooms, facials, and aromatherapy. These treatments not only support physical relaxation but also enhance mental well-being, reduce stress, and aid recovery.

There are different types of spas, including day spas for short relaxation visits, resort spas in hotels or wellness centers, and medical spas that provide therapeutic treatments. A visit to a spa promotes holistic relaxation and is a proven method for enhancing health and well-being.

Questions & answers

Häufige Fragen

How does a day spa differ from a hotel spa?

A day spa is visited for a few hours or a day without an overnight stay. A hotel spa forms part of a hotel and often serves its guests, although some also admit day visitors. The name alone does not tell you which treatments are included.

Does a spa always include a pool, sauna and massage?

No. Spa is an umbrella term for different wellness services. Depending on the venue, water facilities, saunas, beauty treatments or massages may be the main focus. A massage is not automatically included in admission, and a massage studio does not need a pool or sauna.
