Traditional Thai massage

Traditional Thai massage combines pressure techniques, assisted stretches and passive movements, usually on a floor mat while wearing comfortable clothing.

The term

What is traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage, also known as Nuad Thai, is a form of bodywork rooted in Thailand. The practitioner uses hands, forearms, elbows or other contact areas and gently guides the body through different movements and stretches.

Unlike an oil massage, the recipient usually remains in comfortable clothing. Pressure, range of movement and pace are adapted to their mobility and comfort. The alternative name Thai yoga massage refers to the assisted stretches; previous yoga experience is not required.

Tradition and context

So-called Sen lines have a role in Thai tradition. They belong to its traditional explanatory model and are not equivalent to anatomically established nerves or blood vessels. Thai massage includes different schools and sequences and should be distinguished from Thai oil massage.

Questions & answers

Häufige Fragen

How does traditional Thai massage differ from Thai oil massage?

Traditional Thai massage combines pressure with assisted stretches and passive movements, usually on a mat while wearing comfortable clothing. Thai oil massage relies more on gliding strokes over oiled skin. Their shared origin does not mean that the treatments follow the same approach.

Do you need to be very flexible to receive Thai massage?

No. Assisted movements are adapted to your existing range of motion; the aim is not to achieve a particular stretching position. You should not be pushed into a position through pain or resistance. Pressure and movement range are agreed during the session.
