Petrissage

Petrissage is a kneading massage technique used to ease muscular tension and encourage circulation.

The term

What does Petrissage mean?

Petrissage is a massage technique characterized by kneading, lifting, and rolling motions. The term comes from French and means “kneading” or “working.” This technique is performed using the hands, fingers, or thumbs and is particularly effective for relaxing tense muscles, improving circulation, and enhancing tissue elasticity.

During Petrissage, the muscle tissue is gently lifted, pressed, and rolled to release fascial adhesions and improve oxygen supply to the tissues. The intensity can vary – from light movements for relaxation to deeper pressure for therapeutic purposes.

This technique is widely used in Swedish massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage. It helps reduce muscle soreness, relieve tension, and improve body flexibility. It is especially beneficial for large muscle groups such as the back, thighs, or shoulders.

Häufige Fragen

Which movements belong to petrissage?

Petrissage includes kneading, wringing, lifting and rolling soft tissue. The hands grasp an area and work it with rhythmically changing pressure. Unlike a gliding stroke, the tissue is moved and shaped rather than simply stroked over.

Where is petrissage typically used?

Kneading is particularly suited to accessible muscle areas such as the shoulders, thighs or calves. The size of the grip and the amount of pressure are adapted to the body area. Bony edges and sensitive joint areas cannot be kneaded in the same way.
